U.S rapper T.I who collaborated with Justin Timberlake on the smash hit ‘Dead and Gone’ has been sentenced to prison for a year and a day for illegal possession of machine guns.
The 28 year old rapper, real name Clifford J. Harris Jr told his fans during his farewell show at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta: “I’ll see y’all in 366 days.”
T.I.’s woes began in 2007, when a few hours before he was to headline at the BET hip hop awards ceremony in Atlanta, he was found armed in his car, unaware that the bodyguard from whom he was attempting to buy yet more weapons was wearing a wire.
When federal agents swooped, they found that his car contained several more illegal machine guns and his jacket was stuffed with spare bullets. There was a small armoury including a laser-sighted sniper’s rifle hidden in a safe at his seven-bedroom home.
His sentence included 1,500 hours of community service of which he has served over 1,000 hours of that over the past year making appearances at schools and churches in addition to mentoring at-risk kids.
He is due to report to prison tomorrow (26th May 2009) to begin his sentence after his request to have the date pushed back until a place at a minimum security prison closer to his Atlanta home was rejected.
Harris is one of the co-chief executives of Grand Hustle Records and his sixth album, “Paper Trail,” has sold nearly two million copies.
